Scaling & Root Planing

│ What is scaling & root planing?

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning process. The teeth are cleaned below the gum line to remove harmful plaque, tartar, and bacterial buildup which are responsible for gum disease and infection.

│ Is scaling & root planing painful?

A local anesthetic is usually given during treatment to numb the gums and improve patient comfort. If periodontal treatments cause you anxiety or exceptional pain, Dr. Pylant offers sedation dentistry for added comfort.

│ Does scaling & root planing prevent gum disease?

Scaling and root planing is a preventative, protective treatment that is an essential part in protecting you from gum disease. In some cases however, scaling and root planing is insufficient to control gum disease. If you have a more advanced case of gum disease, gum surgery may be needed to further improve the health of your gums. Dr. Pylant will perform a thorough evaluation of your oral health to determine precisely the treatments needed to help you achieve healthy gums.

Gum Grafting

│ What is gum grafting?

Gum grafting is a procedure that involves carefully placing a small amount of new, healthy tissue in an area where little or no gum tissue exists. Dr. Pylant corrects gum recession using the patient’s palatal tissue or Alloderm® Regenerative Tissue Matrix.

│ Why is gum grafting necessary?

Gum grafts may be necessary to correct gum recession in both children and adults. The goal of gum grafting is to provide strong gum tissue that will resist further recession. Untreated recession could lead to eventual tooth loss. Dr. Pylant offers several excellent gum grafting procedures and will consult with each patient to determine the type that will work best for you.

│ What causes gum recession and the need for gum grafting?

Recession can be caused by brushing too hard or may just be the result of inheriting thin gums. If you are concerned about gum recession or have questions about whether or not gum grafting is the right procedure for you, call our office today to schedule a thorough evaluation with Dr. George Pylant.

Crown Lengthening

│ What is crown lengthening?

The crown is the part of your tooth this is visible above your gum line. Crown lengthening is a procedure that involves removing soft tissue and sometimes bone to increase the amount of tooth that is visible - giving the appearance of a “longer” crown (or “crown lengthening”). Crown lengthening, also known as a gum lift, may be performed to achieve a cosmetic enhancement or for restorative purposes.

│ do i need crown lengthening?

If you have excessive gum tissue, your teeth may look worn or unhealthy. Dr. Pylant can remove excess gum tissue and give your smile a brighter, healthier appearance by creating symmetry and causing the crown, or top portion of the tooth, to appear longer. In some cases, crown lengthening may be necessary to expose a greater portion of a tooth in order to accommodate a dental crown. If you have questions about crown lengthening, call our office today to schedule a consultation with Dr. George Pylant.

Frenectomy

│ What is a frenectomy?

A frenectomy is a minor surgical procedure in which the frenum (the tissue which connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth or the inside of the lips to the gums) is altered or removed.

│ DO I NEED A FRENECTOMY?

For some patients, a frenum can interfere with tongue or lip movement while in other cases the frenum can make braces uncomfortable. If you find that your braces are irritating the frenum or the frenum is interfering with normal movement, Dr. Pylant can perform a frenectomy to resolve these issues and restore your comfort and confidence. If your dentist is recommending a frenectomy or if you have questions about the procedure, call our office today to schedule an appointment with Dr. George Pylant.
